Black holes in general relativity

چکیده

What is going on (as of August 2008) at the interface between theoretical general relativity, stringinspired models, and observational astrophysics? Quite a lot. In this mini-survey I will make a personal choice and focus on four specific questions: Do black holes “exist”? (For selected values of the word “exist”.) Is black hole formation and evaporation unitary? Can one mimic a black hole to arbitrary accuracy? Can one detect the presence of a horizon using local physics?

Measurements of Black Hole Spins and Tests of Strong-Field General Relativity

Fast variability studies of accreting black holes in the Galaxy offer us a unique opportunity to measure the spins of black holes and test the strong-field behavior of general relativity. In this review, I summarize the arguments often used in attempts of measuring the spins of black holes, concentrating on their theoretical foundations. I also argue that X-ray studies of accreting black holes ...

Testing the black hole “no-hair” hypothesis

Black holes in General Relativity are very simple objects. This property, that goes under the name of “no-hair,” has been refined in the last few decades and admits several versions. The simplicity of black holes makes them ideal testbeds of fundamental physics and of General Relativity itself. Here we discuss the no-hair property of black holes, how it can be measured in the electromagnetic or...

Instability of Ultra-Spinning Black Holes

It has long been known that, in higher-dimensional general relativity, there are black hole solutions with an arbitrarily large angular momentum for a fixed mass [1]. We examine the geometry of the event horizon of such ultra-spinning black holes and argue that these solutions become unstable at large enough rotation. Hence we find that higher-dimensional general relativity imposes an effective...

Description of Pseudo-newtonian Potential for the Relativistic Accretion Disk around Kerr Black Holes

We present a pseudo-Newtonian potential for accretion disk modeling around the rotating black holes. This potential can describe the general relativistic effects on accretion disk. As the inclusion of rotation in a proper way is very important at an inner edge of disk the potential is derived from the Kerr metric. This potential can reproduce all the essential properties of general relativity w...

Black Holes: from Speculations to Observations

This paper provides a brief review of the history of our understanding and knowledge of black holes. Starting with early speculations on “dark stars” I discuss the Schwarzschild "black hole" solution to Einstein’s field equations and the development of its interpretation from "physically meaningless" to describing the perhaps most exotic and yet "most perfect" macroscopic object in the universe...

Gravitational Waves and Black Holes An Introduction to General Relativity

In these lectures general relativity is outlined as the classical field theory of gravity, emphasizing physical phenomena rather than formalism. Dynamical solutions representing traveling waves as well as stationary fields like those of black holes are discussed. Their properties are investigated by studying the geodesic structure of the corresponding space-times, as representing the motion of ...
